    Naruto Uzumaki

I never go back on my word. That is my way of the Ninja.

Voiced by: Junko Takeuchi (JP), Maile Flanagan (EN), Isabel Martiñón (Latin America)

The main character. The HeroIn case you couldn't tell. He starts off as the stock Shonen anime Hero out to prove his worth to the villagers who've shunned and hated him by becoming the Hokage  of Konoha. As a newborn, the Fourth Hokage, his own father, sealed the evil Nine-Tailed Fox demon inside his body. He goes from being viewed as nothing but the demon itself to a full-fledged ninja once he saves his sensei Iruka from the evil Mizuki. He gradually matures from his Idiot Hero demeanor over the course of the series, and by the time Shippuden rolls in, he's older and wiser, not to mention stronger than ever.
Now Naruto is one of Konoha's most powerful ninja, easily was considered to be Hokage by the villagers after Pain's Invasion, master of Sage Mode and he beat the Nine-Tailed Fox, taking its power for his own.

  • Adaptation Dye Job: His chakra color, and therefore the color of his Rasengan as well, was changed from yellow to blue in the anime.
  • All Of The Other Reindeer
  • Almighty Janitor: Out of all of his friends, Naruto is still technically a genin. A genin that can harness the very power of the Earth along with the power of what can only be described as a calamity made flesh sealed in his stomach, is a literal One Man Army, who's personal favorite technique is essentially the logical conclusion of tossing a million razors into a whirlwind and sealing it into one (or a hundred)Happy Fun Balls, and can pull multiple several-story-tall weapon-using toads from another realm, but still a genin.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Lets just say Naruto gets this a lot in fanfiction. Considering all the tropes about him here, there's no reason why they can't.
  • Anchored Ship: He's in love with Sakura, but doesn't believe he can tell her until he fulfills his promise to bring back Sasuke. (To further complicate matters, he said this at some point before finding out Hinata loves him.) Most recently, Sakura told him that she loves him and not Sasuke now, but Naruto calls bullshit on it. The fact that she was asking him to go back on his promise didn't help matters much either.
    • It's worth mentioning that even after Hinata's confession, that ship has yet to be revisited. The best they've done is have Naruto acknowledge it in a single panel, and only for the sacrifice therein, not the actual declaration.
  • Animal Motifs: Foxes due to being the Nine-Tailed Fox's host, and toads due to his affiliation with the ones of Mount Myobokuzan. Also, he has a money pouch that's designed to look like a frog.
    • Which in the subbed version, he amusingly calls 'Gama-chan' (closest english translation: 'Little Froggy').
  • Attention Whore: In the very early days of the manga, and most definitely in the academy.
  • Awesome But Impractical: Pretty much every ability he learns is prohibitively chakra draining, has a massive buildup, is slowly killing him, or frequently all three.
    • Subverted, because his chakra is nearly infinite, he has Shadow Clone jutsu to distract the enemy thus giving him time, and godlike stamina. After mastering Sage Mode and taming the Nine-Tails, nothing short of his own intelligence is gonna stop him.
  • Badass: After Sage-mode training, although this is debateable. For a good amount of readers, despite his stupidity, he was a badass all along.
    • Badass Boast: He always boast before he engages in fight. Of course, it only became real badass after chapter 432.
    • Badass Long Coat: When Naruto returned from learning Sage Mode to fight Pain, he was sporting one of these, and later lost it.
  • Base Breaker: While not as prevalent as fandom's reaction to Sasuke, Naruto's characterization in Shippuden rubbed a lot of fans the wrong ways.
    • Since Naruto is only Stupid Good in regards to Sasuke, this may be less to do with Naruto, and more of a side effect of Sasuke's Base Breaking.
  • Battle Aura: One in the form of the Biju cloak, and the other while using his Sage Mode abilities. He can punch people with both.
  • Beneath The MaskDark Naruto. What? You think he actually came out of nowhere? The place was called the Waterfall of TRUTH, people. Make of that what you will.
  • Berserk Button: NEVER hurt his friends, ever. A recent example nearly caused the Nine-Tailed Fox to fully manifest.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Several times throughout the course of the series, but the absolute best has to be his rescue of Tsunade and the Leaf Village from Pain. Partially subverted in this case because Pain had already killed multiple significant characters and obliterated the vast majority of the village landscape before he arrived. Double subverted because he manages to convince Pain to make a Heel Face Turnso Pain promptly sacrifices his own life to revive everyone he'd killed.
    • He has managed to pull off possibly a Most Triumphant Example of this trope later on, preventing Sasuke from killing Sakura with a kunai, while Sasuke had Sakura gripped by the throat, by grabbing her out of his hands, and taking a veritable paper cut from the blade intended to kill Sakura. The looks on KakashiSakura, and most of all Sasuke's faces are priceless.
  • Big Eater
  • BishonenYour Mileage May Vary. His level of bishie-ness (or non-bishie-ness) is very polarizing in the fandom. Though his Hot Mom Kushina said that he has her looks and Minato's hair.
  • Blow You Away / Razor Wind: The main nature of his chakra is "Wind", and he puts it to good use with Futon(Wind Style): Rasen Shuriken, which basically creates a crapload of tiny little blades that cut every cell in your body.
  • Black Eyes Of Evil: Chapters 492 and 493 give us Dark Naruto, who's a manifestation of the darkness in Naruto's heart, complete with a constant Slasher Smile and eyes that are completely black.
  • Blue Eyes
  • Book Dumb
  • Bratty Half Pint: In the beginning.
  • Broken Hero
  • Butt Monkey: At the start of the series, but generally this has faded.
  • Cant Catch Up: A big problem in Part 2. Every time Naruto learns something new, Sasuke is automatically made stronger without effort, so Naruto has to do more training. Rinse, repeat.
    • Possibly subverted at this point, Naruto seems to be outstripping Sasuke at a lightning-fast pace. Especially now that he has free access to the Nine Tails's chakra.
      • Except that Sasuke's getting his God Eyes on, and we know how much the author loves the Sharingan.
  • Chain Of People: Naruto replicates to pull this off by himself occasionally.
  • Character Title
  • The Chosen One: According to Jiraiya, Naruto is the one child of an ancient prophecy destined to save the world and not Nagato aka Pain as he always thought. Though it's later hinted that they're both The Chosen One. Might as well be the one, though, since the other is dead..
  • Cross Dressing Voices
  • Crouching Moron Hidden Badass: This trope more or less defines Naruto.
  • Cursed With Awesome
  • Deceased Parents Are The BestDeconstructed- Sure he has more freedom, and Sasuke sort of envies Naruto for never having known his parents, but he's an emotional basket case because of it.
  • Detect Evil
  • Determinator
  • Ditzy Genius: He may normally be an idiot, but the plans and strategies he comes up at the span of seconds while under pressure are definitely to be admired. It has gotten to the point it is lampshaded at various points in part II.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Towards Sakura in Part I.
  • Dumb Blonde
  • Dumb Is Good
  • Estrogen Brigade Bait: Especially when not wearing his trademark orange outfit.
  • Everythings Better With Spinning: His Signature Move, the Rasengan, and all its variants. The tenth anniversary game one-ups this by making an Instant Awesome Just Add Dragons version!
  • Eyes Always Shut: When thinking.
  • Facial Markings
  • Fan Nickname: "Naruko" for his Sexy/Harem Jutsu and "GARuto" for whenever his badass starts reaching critical levels.
  • Flash Step
  • Fridge BrillianceAs corny as it may be, it makes a some sense why Kishimoto had Naruto, a ninja, wear an orange jumpsuit. His father was well known as the Yellow Flash and his mother was known for her Fiery Red Hair. The two colors together makes Orange, the color Naruto is most known for wearing.
    • A lesser one was revealed during his battle with Kyubi. Remember in the final part of Naruto vs Pain, when he had tossed two Rasenshurikens at Pain...and then all the questions on how he created all those clones while still in Sage Mode? Well he's only limited to two clones when he has other clones gathering Natural Energy. When he ran out of those...that limit is gone and he could create as many clones as he wanted.
  • Generation Xerox: Jiraiya, a member of the Legendary Sannin and Naruto's godfather-mentor, has more on one occassion remarked that Naruto resembles and is surely able to surpass his former student the Fourth Hokage, who is Naruto's father, and even himself (in terms of awesome and pervertedness). Kakashi also remarked in the third Shippuden movie Inheritors of the Will of Fire that Naruto's ethic of protecting his friends solemnly reminds him of his late comrade Obito Uchiha, whose spiky hair and knuckleheaded determination Naruto mirrored perfectly. And to put the icing on the cake, Naruto's personality, favorite food, and even verbal tic are all similar to his mother's.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Often absorbs blows and blades, but thanks to his healing factor he is usually quick to recover. What really makes this an example is that he survived having a hole blown into his lung, and thanks to his regeneration being put into overdrive, quickly healed in seconds.
    • Averted mostly though. Naruto doesn't really pay attention to his healing factor most of the time. Besides, his passive healing power is relatively slow too. In fact, the only time its come in handy in an actual fight is the aforementioned lung attack. All other times it presented as a simple increased recovery time, or as getting rid of cuts and scraps.
  • Healing Factor: Thanks to the Kyuubi.
  • Heartwarming Orphan
  • The Hero
  • Heroic Self Deprecation: Beats the shit out of himself if he feels he's being "useless". He especially can't stand the fact that he hasn't been able to redeem his now evil friend, Sasuke.
  • Heroes Want Red Heads: The girl he has a crush on has pink hair, he loves his mother's red hair and at least a couple of the Filler girls he's Ship Teased with have red hair.
  • Hidden Depths: And holy shit how, enough to be poster boy on the trope page.
  • Highly Visible NinjaLifetime achievement award. And it seems it's a hereditary trait between his mother's red and father's yellow.
  • Hot Blooded
  • Ho Yay / Foe Yay: With Sasuke, depending on your interpretation. Also with Sai and Gaara.
  • Idiot Hero
  • I Gave My Word: He never goes back on his promises.
  • In Series Nickname: As a kid, he had on more than one occasion been called the "Number One Hyperactive Knucklehead Ninja" by Kakashi, which caught on here and there.
  • Iron Woobie
  • Jerk With A Heart Of Gold: Can be fairly blunt and quite willing to tell people when he thinks less than highly of them, but is very willing to help when needed.
  • Keet
  • Launcher Of A Thousand Ships: Has been shipped with just about every named character in the series.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Often charges in on his own, and gets called out for it by Yamato, Kakashi and Sakura in the Three-Tails arc.
  • Leitmotif
  • Lightning Bruiser: He qualifies as this when using the Fox's power, and even moreso when in Sage Mode.
  • Luke I Am Your Father: His dad is the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. Not that it wasn't incredibly obvious all along.
  • Like Father Like Son: While he is a lot like his father it's mostly appearance wise. He takes most after his mother.
  • Living Weapon: Although he was first introduced as a living prison, Minato later outright stated he was made a Jinchuriki for the purpose of combating Madara.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: Pulls this off in the anime's rendition of his 6 Tails form.
  • Megaton Punch: Against the normally-comedic spirit of this trope in comparison to its normally-serious brother Punched Across The Room, but there's no other way to describe some of the blows he's dished out in Part I when using the Fox's power, especially during his fight against Sasuke, where he used a chakra arm to yank Sasuke in at high speed and hit him with a punch that sent him flying hundreds of feet - way too much impact-force to be classified as a mere "Punched Across The Room".
  • Memetic BadassGARuto!, GODruto!
  • Mes A Crowd: One of his two trademark techniques.
  • The Messiah: Deconstructed to some extent a few chapters after his fight with Pain, but reconstructed in the same amount of time, thankfully.
  • The Mc Coy
  • Notso DifferentBase Breaker aside, Naruto and Sasuke follow almost to a T the same path. Beside teacher, nature and Kuchiyose: Both lost their families and had to live alone, posses abilities passed from generations, suffered from the distrust of the Council, are obsesive to the point of fanatism in their goals, posses beyond level of force of will, obtained obscene amounts powers at ridiculous fast levellevel up like it going out of stile, had killed some of the strongest Shinobis alive, faced and overcome absurdingly powerful opponents by help of their comrades/team (and tons of Luck-AssPull) and even are destined to face and probably end the milenary feud between Senju/Uchiha
  • One Winged Angel / Superpowered Evil Side: Any tail form past two qualifies.
  • Red Oni to Sasuke's Blue
  • Required Secondary Powers: His Healing Factor is Cast From Lifespan, but his clan is gifted with very long lives, mitigating the cost.
  • Secret Legacy
  • Shipper On Deck: Ships Shikamaru and Temari.
  • Sealed Evil In A Can and Sealed Inside A Person Shaped Can: He's the aforementioned Person.
  • Signature Move: Shadow Clones and later Rasengan.
  • Spanner In The WorksTo the point where Madara actually calls him out on this trope.
  • Sphere Of Destruction: His Rasengan to a slight extent, but undoubtedly the Rasenshuriken counts as this.
  • Stepford Smiler: He smiles near-constantly, which, during his childhood, was to mask the sadness of his lonely life. Those who are closest to him (Sakura, in particular) are able to recognize when his smile isn't genuine (which is, surprising enough considering his personality, almost all the time).
  • Super Mode
  • Take A Third OptionAs discussed below, Naruto has decided that any battle between him and Sasuke would see both contenders dying. Also a subversion, in that in saying this, Naruto is still trying to convince Sasuke to come back.
  • Taking You With MeHis ultimate plan if he can't convince Sasuke to come home. Naruto doesn't want anyone else to be hurt by Sasuke, so, should he be unable to convince Sasuke, he will make sure he is the only victim of Sasuke's rampage.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Turning into a master of this.
  • This Loser Is You: In the beginning.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: He tried (while under a fox rage) to kill someone in the first arc but stopped when he came to his senses. Other than that, he follows this code. The Pain bodies don't count because they're undead.
  • Time To Unlock More True Potential: Constantly. Every time Naruto learns a new skill, it's quickly rendered insufficient and it's back to training. Rinse and repeat. The most recent example is him training to gain complete control of the nine-tails chakra. One hopes that having the power of a Physical God will be considered enough.
  • Took A Level In Badass: Several times. Sage training has taken him to truly epic levels.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Ramen, ramen, ramen!
  • Training From Hell: Pretty much everything he's ever learned has involved this, though at least some of it was offscreen. He's taken several levels in badass because of it. His latest has him bitchslap the Kyuubi and take its chakra.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Where to begin....
  • Trickster Archetype
  • Tsundere: Between his Dogged Nice Guy and Jerk With A Heart Of Gold moments, he averages out to this.
  • Unskilled But Strong: At least early on. During the Chuunin Exams, this is played in contrast to Neji's Weak But Skilled. Shaddow Clone training helps convert raw power into skill, but he's still prone to muscle his way through jutsus that require chakra control.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Thrice. In part 1 when he believed Sasuke had been killed, in part 2 against Orochimaru and when Pain seemingly kills Hinata.
  • Verbal Tic: "Dattebayo/Believe It!" He uses it as a comma, for gods sake. "The sky's blue, Believe It!"
  • Warrior Prince: Son of the Fourth Hokage, the closest to royalty you can get in a ninja village.
  • Why Did It Have To Be Ghosts?: His phasmophobia is played up in some of the filler episodes.
  • Woolseyism: "Believe It!" was meant to fill in the mouth movements for "Dattebayo" in the dub. Over time, he stops doing this.

    Sasuke Uchiha
Voiced by: Noriaki Sugiyama (JP), Yuri Lowenthal (EN), Victor Ugarte (Latin America)

Sasuke Uchiha is rival and The Lancer of Team 7, a prodigy who possesses the power copying Sharingan bloodline limit. He's one of the last remaining members of the Clan, who were mostly murdered by his Aloof Big Brother Itachi in a single night. Since the incident, Sasuke focused himself to acquire enough power to kill Itachi and avenge the clan. Initially a loner and so-not-a-team player, Sasuke develops a grudging respect for Naruto. He eventually grows jealous of the possibility of Naruto outshining him, and abandons Konoha and heads off to join Orochimaru, who desired his Sharingan. Not even an epic battle with Naruto could change his mind.
In Shippuden, he returns, stronger than ever, and now knows of the Nine-Tailed Fox inside Naruto. He disposes of Orochimaru, forms a team of the latter's old captives and associates, calling the team "Snake", and finally faces his brother in battle. After Itachi dies suddenly, Sasuke learns from Madara some harsh truths about the history of Konoha and the Uchiha Clan. He and his team, now called "Hawk", joins up with Akatsuki to wipe out Konoha. All in the name of revenge. Again.

  • Aloof Ally: Towards Madara. Or rather, he likes thinking so. It's more accurate to say he's completely under More Than Mind ControlHe did try to kill him once... and simply went through him.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: One can argue his quest for revenge falls under filial piety rather than self relief. Filial piety is a critical feature of Asian civilizations (including Japan). Hence, the only people he will ever recognize allegiance to are his dead parents and clan. He basically lives for the dead ones. The fact that he totally ignores Itachi's will can also be explained this way, because Itachi was only one among many others. Pretty much confirmed after he kills Danzo, where he rants about how good it feels to clear his clan's name by killing people, and sees it as his mission to do so (not that this makes much sense, mind you). However, he never wonder if those dead ones would (dis)approve his deeds. May be one of the sources of Values Dissonance between Japanese and Western fandom.
    • Remember, he's eating out of Madara's hand, who claims that the entire Uchiha clan sans Itachi wanted to rule Konoha for treating them oh so badly. So he has no need to question how his clan would feel about it.
  • Americans Hate Tingle: Popular in Japan, divisive elsewhere.
    • He is constantly well liked by Latino America Fandom
  • Ax Crazy
  • Avenging The Villain
  • Base Breaker: He even provided the picture of the page for a time!
  • Berserk Button: For a while, Itachi was the only one who could push it, by the virtue of his simple presence. After the latter's death, any off color remark about his clan, especially if it's about Itachi, is enough to make Sasuke snap.
  • Big Badass Bird Of Prey: He gains the ability to summon one at an unknown point after defeating Itachi.
  • Bishonen
  • Butt Monkey: The Patron Saint in Naruto Universe. If something bad is going to happen or a horrible revelation is about to occur is to Sasuke or anyone in his vicinity.
  • Can't Catch UpYour Mileage May Vary with Naruto. Either he was feeling threatened by Naruto who considered a dead last (only the firsts episodes, since he acknowledge as his rival during Chunnin) who keep "besting" him in Jutsu/accomplisment, or be that since Naruto and him where so equal in power mean that he was so far, far, far behind Itachi to accomplish his revenge that he needed to get power in anyway possible. Subverted in Shippuden where is less Cant Catch Up and more about the Cycle Of Revenge
  • Chaste Lancer/Celibate Dragon: Depending on whether you think he never gave any consideration to romance, or deliberately avoids it to focus on his own goals.
    • Sasuke can even be convincingly read as asexual.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: In chronological order: the Leaf Village, Orochimaru, Madara, Jugo and Suigetsu, and the latest is Karin. At this point, he's got almost no one left to stab.
  • The Corruption: Played straight the first time the Cursed Seal manifests itself. Inverted with his Susanoo, which is corrupted as Sasuke continues to give into his own hatred. The most recent form was some sort of massive, fiery-palmed demon that formed in response to Sasuke completely losing his shit over the village's ignorance about Itachi.
  • Curtains Match The Window: Black hair and eyes, as opposed to Naruto's blond and blue-eyed appearance.
  • Deadly Upgrade: The Mangekyou Sharingan. It grants numerous cool powers but slowly degrades the user's eyesight with each use. Since Sasuke has used it excessively upon gaining it, he's nearly blind now, so he decides to finally take his brother's eyes.
  • Discard And Draw: Loses his cursed seal, his regenerative powers, and certain other abilities from Orochimaru's remains, but acquires the Mangekyou Sharingan.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: He decides to destroy the entire village of Konaha in retaliation for a few of its higher-ups (one of which he has killed now) ordering Itachi to kill the rest of the Uchiha. The fact that they were planning a coup d'etat seems to have little to no effect on his decision.
    • If your Family was slaughtered by a goverment to the last member by using the person you loved the most it wouldn't really matter the "reason" for it. Curiously one of the few believable response in the series if going for the overkill.
  • Dissonant SerenityThe smile on his face right before he shoots Chidori through Karin and Danzo. HOLY FUCKING SHIT!
  • Draco In Leather Pants: Is sometimes portrayed as a poor woobie whose acts must be forgiven. Or also being motivated by a strong sense of filial piety for Justice Will Prevail rather than by Revenge Before Reason. What makes him kinda unique (due to his Base Breaker status) is that this effects are also applied Ron The Death Eaterbelow.
  • Dragon With An Agenda: Towards Orochimaru and Madara Uchiha.
    • Co Dragons: Actually closer to this or The Brute of Madara's remaining allies. See Kisame and Zetsu below.
  • Double Standard: Him and Naruto. Up To Eleven. Just compare Him vs Killer bee to Naruto vs Pain. Both used absurdingly fast learned new Powers, both used comrades to barely survive, both got their asses kicked in new and, to be honest, incredibly cool ways and won by pure dumb luck/Ass Pull. Guess who is put in Fa Non as Ditzy Genius and who is deemed as Ron The Death Eater.
  • Eerie Pale Skinned Brunette
  • Estrogen Brigade Bait
  • Evil Eye: The Sharingan.
  • Evil Feels Good: Claims that he never felt better than when he killed Danzo. A sort of evil epiphany?
  • Face Heel Turn
  • Fallen Hero
  • The Fettered -> The Unfettered: Sasuke is really an interesting case. He starts as a mild Unfettered, putting first and foremost his one and only goal to kill Itachi but still keep bond with his teamates and tried to do a Heroic Sacrifice. Then he severed his bonds with his Nakama (and trying to kill Naruto to get the Mangekyou) shows that he has become more Unfettered but the fact that he couldn't finally do it showed that retained some moral principles and refused to kill anyone that he didn't hold a grudge against. Then he decides to take revenge against the Leaf but retains some feelings for the members of Taka. In chap.480, stabing Karin makes him a full Unfettered. This is confirmed a little later, when he asks to have Itachi's eyes transplanted to him. He had refused this earlier.
  • Foe Yay / Ho Yay: With Naruto, depending on your interpretation. Also with Suigetsu and Juugo.
  • Fridge HorrorNiisan...that's one down.
  • Generation XeroxZig Zagged. For a while, Sasuke was similar to Orochimaru, but that's been changing. Double Subverted, as while he isn't following the path of histeacher, his life seems to be headed a direction similar to several of his ancestors. Then Kakashi brings back the comparison with Orochimaru, if only for the teacher verses student parallel.
  • Genocide Backfire: taking Konoha as a whole outside, the Elders really did screw the pooch with the Uchiha Massacre. As Danzo found the hard way
  • Go Mad From The Revelation: He didn't took well the fact that His brother loved him above all else and self-sacrifice and it was by hands of Konoha that the Uchiha where killed
  • Healing Factor: With Orochimaru's remains, until Itachi sealed Orochimaru away.
  • Ineffectual Loner: At least twice. First when he tries to fight Gaara alone, and ends completely exhausted, having to be rescued by Sakura and Naruto. Second, his first fight agains Itachi, where he insists that he he doesn't want any help since it's his fight. This leads him to be beaten to a pulp and Mind Raped.
  • Iron Woobie: Wheter you like him or not and not going to Fa Non, Sasuke had the short stick to him since day one with Having his entire family massacred and show him by his beloved older brother Over and Over again for 72 hours. Twice then discovering he was in fact his brother loved him all along and barely complained to others except to succinct remind them of his goal. Hell the scene in the beach where he cry after Itachi dead is so powerful because is the first time he has done since the massacre/manga Of course then It Got Worse...
  • Its All About Me: Regardless of what your beliefs are on his motivations, the fact that he puts only his own objectives first and foremost is beyond any doubt.
  • It Got Worse: Seriously, this should be the catchphrase of the Character.
  • Jerkass
  • Jumping Off The Slippery Slope: Goes progressively further down the slope in order to get revenge on Itachi. Takes a flying leap off it when he finds out about Itachi's real motives, abandoning whatever moral standards and reason he had beforehand. By the time of the Kages conference, he is no longer above abandoning/sacrificing the rest of Hawk and indiscriminate murder to get his revenge.
  • The Lancer: At first. Now he's The Dragon.
  • Last Of His Kind: Subverted. It is known since the first arc that his big brother is still alive. Later, the founder of the Uchiha clan is revealed to still be alive (sorta).
  • Laughing Mad: Right before he starts demanding the resurrection of his dead clanmembers.
  • Mega Manning: Actually a bit of an aversion. The Sharingan can copy almost any jutsu, save for the Blood Limits. But he has only ever been shown to copy one thing with the use of his Sharingan : a bit of Rock Lee's Tai-Jutsu that he couldn't properly utilse anyway.
  • My God What Have I Done: After learning the truth about Itachi.
  • Misaimed Fandom: A disturbing number of people claims to have become fans of Sasuke after he stabs through Karin to get revenge on Danzo. No, people, it's notsupposed to be considered cool...
  • Moral Event Horizon: Basically chapter 480 and next few ones seem to have been written just to show how far he had has fallen
  • Moral Myopia: Or rather, Moral Blindness in his case.
  • Motive Decay: Actually subverted, despite his behavior. It's his methods which have decayed. He has always wanted to restore the Uchiha clan's name and his own pride but how he thinks he should do so has gone from killing Itachi —> destroying Konoha —> killing Danzo —> killing every last man, woman and child in Konoha and erase the bad name of the Uchiha clan from history.
  • New Powers As The Plot Demands: Might as well be the patron saint of this trope given how much he does it. Even lampshaded by Madara: "Oh, a new summoning? When did he learn that?" It even extends to his teammates, though less seriously.
    • To be Fair this is in part because he is the Blue Oni of Naruto, who is also a Patron Saint. So... co-patron Sait of NPAHTPD?
  • The Not Love Interest: Of Naruto, of course.
  • Not So Stoic/Villainous Breakdown: He was actually more prone to the former than the latter at first. He completely loses it after killing Danzo, railing at Kakashi for having a Sharingan and claiming the carefree laughter of the villagers in his flashbacks is an insult to him and his clanmen.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Plans to kill everyone in Kohona for enjoying the peace that was obtained by the sacrifice of his clan and respecting those who ordered the massacre.
  • One Winged Angel: His level 2 Cursed Seal form. He lost it after Itachi purged him of Orochimaru's power, burning off the wings and demon parts in the process.
  • Pay Evil Unto Evil As far as Sasuke is concerned this is his goal in Life. And if it was only to the Elders he would be totally right The problem is that he went and took it To Up Eleven.
  • Perpetual Frowner: And when he does smile it's either condescending or just plain creepy.
  • Playing Against TypeYuri Lowenthal usually voices the Kid Hero. Now look at the tropes associated with Sasuke, and tell if he's anything like that.
  • Playing With Fire: The Uchiha specialty.
  • Power Born Of Madness Hatred: Essentially the handwave by which Sasuke keeps winning his battles and does the impossible. It's strongly implied that Sasuke becomes stronger the more he gives into his own hatred, but naturally this seems to have come at a (somewhat logical) cost.
  • The Power Of HateUp To Eleven
  • Pride: Sasuke wouldn't probably be so despised by a large amount of viewers if he didn't seem so full of himself and his clan.
  • Psycho Electro: Sasuke's current condition is more due to regularly applied Mind Rape than the Raiton Jutsus, but they are his signature move.
  • Red Eyes Take Warning
  • Revenge Before Reason: Lives on this trope 99% of the time, the lasting 1% being when he's motivated by protecting his NakamaNow at 100%. Should the object of that revenge be removed, fear not! He'll find something new to point his revenge at.
  • The Rival
  • Ron The Death Eater: His portrayal in the earlier parts of the manga is subject to this, despite the above leather pantsing. People tend to stick him with many negative traits he simply does not have, like constantly insulting his teammates or thinking that he's better than everyone else. While he was an Arrogant Kung Fu Guy before the timeskip (though justified), he had at least the decency to keep it civil for the most part. In the first part, he's willing to pull a Heroic Sacrifice to protect Naruto and Sakura. Even in the second part he was strongly reluctant to kill without reason. But since chapter 480He Canonically Got (Much) Worse.
  • Sanity Slippage
  • Shock And Awe: Chidori and numerous other techniques derived from it.
  • Signature Move: Chidori.
  • Sliding Scale Of Anti Heroes: Type III -> Type IV or Type V -> Villain
  • Smug SnakeIt's kind of inevitable.
  • Spotlight Stealing Squad: Just look at the trope picture.
  • The Stoic: Most of the time.
  • Survivor Guilt
  • Tall Dark And Handsome
  • Tall Dark And Snarky: Mostly in part 1.
  • Took A Level In Badass: Between part 1 and part 2. It's difficult to say whether or not the Mangekyo Sharingan gave him one.
  • Took A Level In Jerkass: Starts as Jerk With A Heart Of Gold and slowly works his way down the queue as time passes. He wavers occasionally, like in this chapter for example, but it never seems to stick. Recently, however, he's fully into Its All About Me, even throwing his own teammates to the wolves for the sake of revenge.
  • Unwitting Pawn: His incredibly myopic focus on revenge has made him terribly easy to manipulate, and even the revenge itself was instilled to manipulate him.
  • Used To Be A Sweet Kid: He did. He reallyreally did.
  • Villain Ball: Stabbing your medic in order to get revenge? Yeah, THAT's clever.
    • Also his plan to 'clear his clan's name'... by killing every single person in Kohona... ]]
  • Villain Protagonist: Becomes more and more like this through the course of Part II.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Inverted. The more he gives in to his delusions and his hatred the stronger he gets.
  • The Worf Barrage: We've never seen his sword made of Chidori really kill someone.
  • The Worf Effect: In the first part, Sasuke was often worfed, most notable examples are when he lost to Haku and a Shukaku possessed Gaara. His recent performance in his fights seems to be in order to show off just how badass Killer Bee and the three new Kages are.
    • Curiously he also do this to two extremely strong fighters Deidara and Danzo. Seem to be a cyclic trope with the Character.
    • Earlier in Shippuden he inflicted this on all of Team 7.
  • Well Done Son Guy: Or Well Done Younger Brother Guy... both could apply really.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Towards Orochimaru, no less!
    • Then done to Suigetsu and Jugo. He thanks them for saving his life repeatedly by telling Karin to leave them behind when she expresses concern for them, just so he can have his shot at Danzo.
    • Karin, while not taking direct part in the battle, is instrumental to Sasuke's victory over Danzo, and healed him from his earlier wounds to enable him to fight. When Danzo takes her hostage, Sasuke shoots them both with his Chidori. He tells her that she became a burden when she became a hostage.
  • Whos Laughing Now A side effect with his vengeance. He did it with Itachi and Danzo. The first one it came out lame and It Got Worse. The Second... it was awesome

    Sakura Haruno
Voiced by: Chie Nakamura (JP), Kate Higgins (EN), Christine Byrd (Latin America)

The Chick of Team 7. Naruto has a crush on her, while she has a crush on Sasuke. Sakura herself is an intelligent, gifted kunoichifrom Konoha. Unlike most other ninja in the series, she has no unique skills of her own, using only standard ninja techniques and her brains. As a result, during the first part of the series the poor kid more or less sits on her hands in most battles, and loses the ones she participates in... She concludes that she can't leave things like this, however, and after failing to prevent her friend and first love Sasuke's defection, apprentices herself to Princess Tsunade with the intent of no longer being a burden.
In Shippuden, Sakura has picked up Super Strength and medical skills courtesy of Tsunade's Training From Hell, which turns her from The Load to...well, pretty awesome. Hers is the first major fight of the new series, joining forces with Chiyo to defeat Akatsuki member Sasori in a drawn-out battle. She later helps heal a lot of people - including Hinata - in the Pain Invasion arc. After this, Sai tells her about Naruto's true feelings for her, which causes her - rather unconvincingly - to tell Naruto that she's over Sasuke (he doesn't believe her). She then decides to go after Sasuke herself, but is unable to bring herself to kill him. The Sasuke incident now behind her, she is placed in the Third Division of the Shinobi Alliance under Kakashi, and with Rock Lee and Might Guy.

  • Action Girl <- -> Faux Action Girl. She does have the skills, but. . .
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Heavily deconstructed. She still loves Sasuke, even after everything he's done, including almost killing her twice. At this point, the only thing that keeps her from becoming a Love Martyr is that she's trying to kill him for the sake of Konoha and Naruto.
  • Anchored Ship: Despite all her protests to the contrary in Shippuuden its revealed that she's still in love in with Sasuke despite what he's become, to the point that she's going to attempt to kill him herself, knowing full well that Naruto might end up hating her for it.
  • Betty And Veronica: The Betty as opposed to Karin's Veronica.
  • Character Development: Goes from initially standing on the sidelines to taking an active role in helping Naruto and Sasuke, as well as assisting in Naruto's goal to bring Sasuke back. Much of her development in Part II is answering the question of how best to accomplish this goal.
  • Butt Monkey: Definitely at the beginning of the series, less so as the plot progressed. Unless Sasuke is involved.
  • The Chick
  • Combat Medic: With her chakra control, she can heal injuries (either hers or others') and extract poison... and pulverize rocks with Super Strength.
  • Conflict BallShe wants to fight Sasuke all alone, even if she has to lie to Naruto and knock down her teammates. Justified (or not) by her guilt towards Naruto and the feeling that everything is her fault.
  • Covert Pervert: It goes back as early as the chunin exams.
  • Die For Our Ship: Many fangirls acknowledge her only as the obstacle for Sasuke and/or Naruto to get together, either with each other or other people.
  • Dogged Nice Girl: Towards Sasuke.
  • Every Girl Is Cuter With Hair Decs: She wears her headband as a hairband. She also used to tie her hair with a ribbon when younger.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Grows out her hair while trying to woo Sasuke, until her Important Haircut.
  • Faux Action Girl: Pre-timeskip, Pretty much the same post-timeskip, too, gradually reverting back after the Sasori battle and hitting full Faux Action Girl status again after the Pain arc.
  • Fear Leads To Anger: Towards Naruto.
  • Forehead Of Doom: So big that she was bullied as a little girl because of it.
  • Forgotten Childhood Friend: Ino, but they got better.
  • Generation Xerox: As with Naruto and Sasuke, Sakura trained under a Sannin, in this case Tsunade, and as with Tsunade, she's the least impressive of the three.
  • Generic Cuteness: She's canonically not that attractive, merely cute-looking with a prominent forehead, but you wouldn't know that to look at her.
    • Well, according to Word Of God, she really wasn't attractive at the beginning. Kishomoto's assistants even reacted at her reference sketch saying "She is not cute". Praise Art Evolution here.
  • Green Eyes
  • Heroic Self Deprecation and Sorry I Fell On Your Fist: She feels horribly guilty for not being strong enough.
  • Hot Blooded: Inner Sakura certainly is. Sakura of Shippuuden seems to be as well.
  • Important Haircut: She cuts her long hair off to free herself from three Sound Gennin, who wanted to kill the incapacitated Sasuke and Naruto. It's also a symbol of her new resolve.
  • Launcher Of A Thousand Ships: Fanfiction often makes her the Village Bicycle.
  • The Load: Bounces in and out. She works hard to get over it and hone her skills with Tsunada, but later...
  • Love Makes You DumbYou are a very capable Action Girl with super strength. You worked really hard for it. Please explain how the exhausted blind man you failed to stab was able to overpower, disarm, and nearly kill you when you've been taking punching lessons from a woman that can use a three-story knife.
  • Loving A Shadow: Subverted. Like the other Konoha girls, she at first likes Sasuke just because of his looks and skills, but as Sakura learns more about his troubled personality she comes to care for him for real.
  • Male Gaze: Part II seems to like giving attention to her buttHere's the proof. Probably because she's a Pettanko (see below).
  • Out Of Focus: Despite being billed as one of the leads, Sakura becomes progressively out of focus after her fight with Ino in Part 1. Up until recent events, she also began to suffer the same in Shippuden following the second Arc.
  • Overshadowed By Awesome: All her training under Tsunade allows her to be pretty badass in the first arc of Shippuden, but since Naruto and Sasuke just keep getting stronger, she's rapidly fallen back to being the weakest of the three.
  • Pettanko: Has a rather small chest and once or twice shows irritation about that.
  • Real Women Never Wear Dresses: Often criticized for not being strong enough, as well as her being unable to kill Sasuke, which quite a bunch of people find to be a sexist development.
  • Red Oni to Ino's Blue
  • Rose Haired Girl
  • The Scrappy / Rescued From The Scrappy Heap: While she was more of a Scrappy in the first series, since Shippuden, the fanbase has been split on her character.
  • Shes All Grown Up: In Part 2.
  • Skirt Over Slacks: Part of her standard attire.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: At the beginning.
  • Teen Genius: Before the Time Skip, being a good student with precise chakra control and enough knowledge to * not* need cheating in the written part of the Chuunin exams was the only thing that differentiated her from any other kunoichi. Afterwards, it's what makes her such a good apprentice and medic.
  • This Loser Is You: According to Word Of God. Too bad the Fan Dumb takes it so seriously that they refuse to see ANY good traits in her.
  • Took A Level In Badass: Her efforts pay fruits in Part 2. Boy, does it pay fruit. Before her Character Derailment, at least...
  • Training From Hell: Tsunade subjects her to this so Sakura can develop strength, speed and skills.
  • Tsundere: Especially when she was younger.
  • Water Works: Frequently accused of this by fans, both haters and neutral ones, to the point of Memetic Mutation. Some jokes about the nature of her chakra beingWater for example. It's used in canon, as part of her This Loser Is You theme, but she's never really called out about it by other characters. Indeed, she invoked it for herself.
  • What Measure Is A Non Badass: Ooooooh, poor girl.
  • What The Hell HeroReceived this Naruto after she fakes a confession of love to him. Though she did this in hopes of discouraging Naruto from continuing to chase after Sasuke.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Just watch her reaction to one of Konohamaru's jutsus... that included shadow clones of the naked Sai and Sasuke.
  • You Gotta Have Pink Hair

    Kakashi Hatake

In the ninja world, those who break the rules are scum, that's true, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than scum.
Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (JP), Dave Wittenberg (EN), Alfonso Obregon-Inclan (Latin America)

Kakashi Hatake is a sneaky, snarky ninja who serves as sensei of Team 7, and also as The Big Guy and The Smart Guy. Prior to Team 7, he had failed every single applicant who had come before him. He's one of the strongest ninja in Konoha, and is never seen without his dirty porno novel/manga.
Kakashi, for reasons that are at first unknown, has a Sharingan in his left eye, despite not being of the Uchiha (In a Gaidenprequel story, the eye was revealed to have been transplanted from his deceased friend Obito Uchiha, one of Sasuke's relatives). Kakashi has mastered its use about as well as a non-Uchiha can, picking up the epithet "Copy Ninja". He knows dozens of techniques and uses them, but his only unique jutsu is the Chidori (and its upgraded form, Raikiri), which electrifies his arm, allowing it to punch through anything. He learned the Rasengan from his former sensei, the Fourth Hokage.
In Shippuden, Naruto and Sakura's development causes Kakashi to serve less as a mentor and more as a comrade. He's somehow managed to pick up a variant of the Mangekyo Sharingan that differs from Itachi's, which he uses to crush Deidara's arm in the first arc. He still teaches Naruto, though, eventually helping him create a more powerful variant of the Rasengan. He has recently confronted one of Pain's bodies. After a long battle, he exhausts all of his Chakra and dies. He gets better. After Danzo's treachery was revealed, the leaders of the other ninja villages have decided to treat Kakashi as the Sixth Hokage, which was pre-empted (to his relief - and the complete and utter ''angst'' of his fans - as he admitted he's not the type of person suited for the job) when Tsunade recovered from her coma. After the Shinobi Alliance forms to protect Naruto and Killer Bee from Madara, he is made general of the Third Division.

  • Day In The LimelightKakashi Gaiden
  • Deadpan Snarker: Always has a straight face. One would imagine the mask probably helps in this department.
  • Even The Guys Want Him: The few females * and* males who have seen him unmasked are, well, very impressed.
    • Which is ironic since he supposedly looks exactly like his dad according to Chiyo. His father was very plain looking.
      • Then again, it's Chiyo we're talking about. She really didn't like Sakumo since he killed her son and daughter-in-law aka Sasori's parents, remember?
  • Evil Eye: The Sharingan.
  • Excuse Me While I Multitask: Given a sufficiently inexperienced opponent, he can fight with one hand and read pornographic novels (namely, the "Icha Icha" series written by Jiraiya) with the other. And is quite happy to demonstrate this ability.
  • Eyepatch Of Power: Normally covers his left eye with his Hachimaki. Underneath is his Sharingan. He hides it because unlike an Uchiha, Kakashi is incapable of turning it off at will. Only when facing a strong opponent does he uncover it.
  • Faux Action Guy: Better than most examples but still, in Databook and Wiki is stated that Kakashi is one of the most formidable Shinobi alive, encyclopedic knowledge of jutsu and extremely strong, but so far his battles had been... quite a letdown compared to say Akatsuki, Orochimaru or the Kages remember he was appointed to be the Rukodaime or villian Movie. And in fact had shown to suffer a lot of the Worf Effect against this opponents, even more than Sasuke.
  • Four Star Badass
  • Generation Xerox: He was mentioned to greatly resemble his father Sakumo Hatake, Konoha's White Fang, which made his enemies tremble in fear of him even when he was just about 13 years of age, mistaking him for his father. Cut to many years after when he is already known as Kakashi of the Sharingan and you know the awesome is In The Blood. Further xerox-ing lays credibility that since the Sandaime Hokage taught the original Sannin of Jiraiya, Orochimaru and Tsunade, and that since the villagers see him as temporary Hokage when Tsunade was in her coma, Kakashi is a generation Xerox of Sarutobi, Sandaime Hokage no Konoha.
  • Iron Woobie: His father committed suicide out of shame. Everyone who was on his first ninja team is dead or hinted at being dead. And his once promising student defected to the side of the sworn enemy of Konoha and has recently passed up any chance of being redeemed. Despite all this, he has spent very little on-screen time angsting.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: He's a big fan of Jiraiya's book series.
  • Mask Power: NEVER seen without it. The only time his face was uncovered, it wasn't shown onscreen. An anime filler episode revolves around Team 7 trying to see under Kakashi's mask. When they finally get him to remove it in front of them, underneath is... another mask.
  • Mega Manning
  • No Mouth: Played with in the best filler of the anime.
  • The Nose Knows: He is said to have a very good sense of smell. And he has a pack of trained canines.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity
  • Parental Abandonment:His father Sakumo committed suicide when Kakashi was six-years old and his mother died before then.
  • Red Baron: Kakashi has two famous nicknames first being Kakashi of the Sharingan, second being The Copy Ninja.
  • Ron The Death Eater: He is sometimes accused of playing favorites towards Sasuke. Also, some fanfictions have him hating Naruto for having the Kyuubi sealed in him since Minato sacrificed his life in order to do it.
  • Sempai Kohai: Senpai to Yugao, Yamato and Sai (who considers him as such in the anime).
  • Shock And Awe: His Affinity
  • Signature Move: Raikiri, similar to the Chidori only better.
  • Team Dad: To Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke.
  • Tragic Keepsake:He kept his fathers Tanto for a good bit, but his sharingan eye, which was transplanted into him from his dead best friend, Obito Uchiha is what really falls into this trope.
  • Tranquil Fury: What happens when he truly gets pissed.
  • Unknown Rival: Guy is his, though it may be more that Kakashi does not want to acknowledge it.
  • White Haired Pretty Boy
  • Worf Effect: Suffers this from time to time, like when Itachi defeats him easily during his return to Konoha, but tends to do better than many other characters do.

    Other Members of Team 7
Starting in Shippuden, two members are added to Team 7. Initially, they were just meant to be replacements for Kakashi after his overuse of the Mangekyo Sharingan during the first Shippuden arc exhausted him to the point where he had to be hospitalized, but they've stuck around for subsequent arcs.

Sai

Voiced by: Satoshi Hino (JP), Benjamin Diskin (EN)

Sai is... a jerk, to put it mildly. A ninja from the village of Konoha, pretty much all that is known about Sai is that he's a loner and that he has no family. He's a member of ANBU's Root Division, and first joins Team 7 in the second arc. "Sai", a type of three-pronged dagger, is probably a pseudonym, but who knows? Given Root's... special methods of training, it might even be his real name.
As one might expect from someone who isn't around people much, Sai doesn't exactly make the greatest of first impressions on his teammates. Indeed, his first actions are to question Naruto's manhood, call Sakura ugly, and diss their former teammate Sasuke. Naruto flatly states that he'll only put up with Sai for Sasuke's sake. He claims to have no personality whatsoever — being polite or assholic is just a front for him.
A talented artist, Sai claims to have drawn several thousand pictures in his life, but, in keeping with his role as the hollow man, finds himself incapable of ever giving one a title. Sai uses his art in his jutsu. He has the ability to animate his drawings, creating creatures for attack or espionage, or generating clones out of ink.
It seems, however, that his purpose is more than just filling out Team 7. In reality, he was given the job by Danzo to assassinate Sasuke — a task which he's clearly unable to do. He has a change of heart and forms a genuine friendship with Naruto and Sakura, although he's very socially awkward (which is often played for laughs).
When the Shinobi Alliance formed divisions to fight against Madara, Sai was placed in the Ambush Division under Kankuro and alongside Omoi. They fight Deidara, Sasori, and two other Edo Tensei zombies. One of whom turned out to be Sai's deceased brother.

Yamato

Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama (JP), Troy Baker (EN)

A member of ANBU, and one of Kakashi's juniors, he is made the temporary Captain of Team 7 while Kakashi recovers in the hospital. As he serves as more of a unit leader than a mentor, Naruto and Sakura call him "taichou"("Captain" or "Commander" in the English manga) instead of "sensei". The name "Yamato" (which means "spear") is actually a codename given to him by Tsunade; his real name is Tenzou. He very much prefers to be called Yamato.
As a child, Yamato was one of sixty infants that Orochimaru injected with the DNA of the First Hokage, trying to replicate the First's unique abilities. Fifty-nine died, and Orochimaru was forced to flee the village before learning that one subject — Yamato — had survived. As a result, Yamato can use the First Hokage's Mokuton ("Wood-style") jutsus, although not with the First's level of ability.
Yamato is a friendly, easygoing person. He prefers diplomacy over using threats when it comes to running his team, but he's not afraid to scare Naruto into doing what he wants. He notes that he's less indulgent than Kakashi is, and says that Naruto and Sakura should not be treated as ninjas in training who need protection, but as ninjas who will eventually have to support Konoha. It's revealed that he was selected as Captain for more than his Mokuton abilities — he is the only person in the village capable of using Enclosed Hermitage: Return to Society, which, in turn, is the only technique strong enough to contain Naruto's four-tailed Fox state. He later helps Naruto with his training, helping to prevent the fox's chakra from becoming dominant. After the Shinobi Alliance decides to hide the remaining jinchuriki, Yamato accompanies Naruto to a hidden island in Lightning Country, but gets captured by Kabuto.

  • Death Glare : His "ghoul eyes," although only Naruto seems to be scared by it.
  • Fate Worse Than Death / Fridge Horror : So Yamato was abducted as a child and experimented upon by a creepy snake-themed Mad Scientist. He survives, goes on to become a fairly well-adjusted adult, only to be ultimately abducted yet again by another creepy snake-themed Mad Scientist (the protege of the first one, no less!). Oh and then it is strongly implied that after having vital information forcibly extracted from him, he will be used for endless experimentation again. Disturbing much?
  • Green Thumb: His use of the wood techniques, which also require him to be able to control water and earth as well.
  • The Captain
  • The Stoic: Typically calm and levelheaded, although he can be disturbed by shocking developments.
  • Sempai Kohai: Kakashi is his senpai, and he once brings up this fact when trying to get him to pay for a meal.
  • The Smart Guy
  • The Unfunny: Most of the interaction between Bee & Naruto leaves him speechless
